Passkeys Move Authentication Beyond Reusable Passwords

5 November 2026

By Sunil Parajuli

Technology teams are moving quickly in passkeys, but useful adoption depends on understanding both the opportunity and the operational risk.

What is changing

Passwords can be copied, replayed and phished. Passkeys bind authentication to the legitimate service and remove the shared secret from the server.

What technology leaders should do

Support account recovery carefully, retain strong device enrollment controls and measure fallback-password use rather than only passkey registration.

The practical goal is not to adopt every new capability. It is to choose a clear use case, establish measurable success criteria, and build security and accountability into the system from the beginning.
